Cornell Elementary Inclusive Playground Project

Thanks to the incredible support of our alumni, community partners, and donors, the Cornell Elementary Inclusive Playground project has been fully funded.

This achievement reflects the strength of the Saydel community and our shared commitment to creating opportunities for all students. The Saydel Alumni Association (SAA) is excited to report that through their efforts which included both grant writing and fundraising, Cornell will be getting an added 1200+ square foot of playground with a special colorful surface called Duraplay. The new area will house two all-inclusive pieces of playground equipment—an Atom Spinner and Cloud 9 Swing. An ‘all-inclusive” playground is a specially designed play space that enables children of all abilities—including those with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities—to play together safely and with their peers. Both pieces of equipment are wheel chair assessable due to their low height which allows transfer for students with physical challenges. Shortly after the SAA was organized, members of the SSA met with Cornell’s Principal Brian Vaughn about the needs of the school. The addition of this playground area was high on Brian’s wish list. Working directly with Linda Cummings, SAA Board Member, several grants were completed and submitted by the SSA on behalf of Cornell pursuing funds for this project, at a cost of $72,942. Two awards were granted—the first from Prairie Meadows in late 2025 in the amount of $22,942—a Youth Sports and Recreation Grant. The second grant was awarded in early 2026 by Polk County in the amount of $36,471—a Community Development Grant. The balance of the project was obtained through donations from two very generous Saydel Alumni, which have opted to remain anonymous, making the playground possible. Cornell is currently waiting for the equipment and special surface to arrive from the vendors so that installation can begin. The playground should be completed sometime in July or August, but before school resumes for the 2026/2027 school year.
